Longtime Rockville Centre resident Seymour Berger — Sy to his friends — died in his home on Dec. 14, of natural causes. He was 91.
Berger is credited with reinventing the Topps baseball card in the 1950s, turning it into the collectible that it is today. Sitting at the kitchen table in his former home in the Bronx, he sketched out the idea for the modern baseball card: a color picture of the player on the front, along with the team logo and the player’s signature, and the player’s vital statistics on the back of the card.

The investigation into the overpayment of staff members by the Rockville Centre School District is complete, and the cause was determined to be an error in contract interpretation by someone in the business office, the Board of Education said at its meeting on Dec. 10.

Some fire departments on Long Island are facing a shortage of volunteers, which is affecting both their ambulance and fire response services.
But the Rockville Centre Fire Department is going strong. In fact, the RVCFD, with more than 340 members, boasts the largest membership of any volunteer department in New York state.

The story in Ferguson, Mo. is well-known by now: police officer Darren Wilson shot and killed Michael Brown, an unarmed teenager.
The residents of Ferguson certainly never expected to be thrust into the spotlight in the way they were. It was a tragedy that could have happened in any small town in America, including Rockville Centre, which is one of the few municipalities in Nassau County to have its own police department.

When Nassau County first announced that it would be installing speed cameras in every school district, it cited safety as the reason that tickets would start being issued. But there are many intersections in Rockville Centre that aren’t near schools that are far more dangerous.
