Congratulations to the members of the Red and Blue teams on another successful production. In its 96th year, the competition is still a great showcase of the participants’ incredible talents. As we approach the event’s 100th anniversary, however, I believe that now is the time for us to reflect on whether continuing such an event in today’s day and age is still appropriate. I realize that even suggesting that we re-examine the merits of Red and Blue will provoke a deep-seated and visceral reaction among many residents of our village. Let me be clear: I am not necessarily calling for an end to Red and Blue — just that this village engage in an open and frank discussion about the event. more

Continuing her outspoken opposition to New York state’s new teacher and principal evaluation system, which links educator ratings to student test scores, South Side High School Principal Dr. Carol Burris organized a meeting of 100 of her colleagues from the metropolitan area Monday afternoon. The gathering kicked off a campaign to alert the public and legislators to what educators describe as the weaknesses and costs of the Annual Professional Performance Review, which has been championed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and state Education Commissioner John King. more
