Some school dismissal times change and most after-school activities are cancelled Tuesday in Bellmore-Merrick
Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s three high schools and two middle schools will dismiss students earlier than usual Tuesday due to the snowstorm moving into the area. Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham high schools will end their school day at 1:30 p.m. today, and Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools will end their school day at 2:15 p.m. There will be no late buses at any of the schools, and all afternoon and evening activities in the district are cancelled. more

Students like him are the reason that all 28 of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s fall squads were designated New York State Scholar-Athlete Teams by the state Public High School Athletic Association, Central District officials say. He finishes 45 minutes of homework, grabs a late pass and dashes to practice, after which he sits down to another two to three hours of studies at home. The junior’s commitment to homework, in part, explains why he has attained a 98 average while taking a battery of Advanced Placement and Honors classes and is already committed to play at Dartmouth. more

Intel honors three Kennedy seniors
Kennedy High senior Rebecca Jellinek, who played the lead in the school play, “Twelfth Night,” in mid-November, set up a mini-office backstage when she was rehearsing for the play, furiously tapping away at her laptop whenever her presence wasn’t required onstage. In addition to prepping for her performance in this modern version of the Shakespearean classic, Jellinek was also writing her senior science research thesis for submission to the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search. The paper was due Nov. 13. Opening night was Nov. 15. more

Wrestlers from Kennedy, Mepham and Calhoun all turned in strong performances at the annual Sprig Gardner tournament, hosted by the Cougars Dec. 13 and the Pirates the following day. Kennedy finished second among the nine-team field. more

In her years at Kennedy High School in Bellmore, Merokean Sara Rosenzweig grew accustomed to finishing first among Cougar cross-country and track runners. She twice qualified for the New York State High School Cross-Country Championship, and ended her high school career last spring by capturing the Nassau County steeplechase title. more
