Vote 'yes' on the Bellmore-Merrick Central District budget
Voting for the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s $139.5 million budget should be a no-brainer for local residents. Newsweek recently ranked all three of the Central District’s high schools –– Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham –– among the top 600 high schools in the nation –– out of more than 26,000 high schools. Mepham parents raise field safety questions
A group of a half-dozen Mepham High School parents spoke out at the May 8 Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education meeting, calling on the district to replace the old wooden visitors bleachers at the Mepham football field. A number of the seats have worn out or rotted through, and parents said they believe someone will eventually fall from the bleachers and get hurt unless they are fixed. more

Bellmore-Merrick high schools rank high on Newsweek list
Newsweek magazine and The Daily Beast, in its recently published “America’s Best High Schools” list, included 18 high schools from New York’s 4th Congressional District, which covers much of southwest Nassau County. All three of Bellmore-Merrick’s high schools –– Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham –– were on the list. more

Fewer than 95 percent of students at Old Mill Road School in North Merrick took new English Language Arts tests that the state launched last month — a threshold that schools must meet for them to have made “Adequate Yearly Progress,” according to the New York State Department of Education.

With a diverse lineup of Bellmore-Merrick Central High School district students, alumni and musicians from throughout Nassau County, more than a dozen bands battled it out at the Brookside School last week at a Bellmore-Merrick Community Wellness Council event that raised more than $2,500 for the council’s annual Midnight Madness drug- and alcohol-free post-prom party. more

The Midnight Madness post-prom party for Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District students is difficult to finance, according to members of the Community Wellness Council. President Emilio Manzo said the organization planned to hold another disco night fundraiser to benefit the substance-free program until Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg suddenly suggested at a meeting that they host an all-ages battle of the bands. more
