When Dr. Henry Kiernan arrived in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District in July 2005, newly hired as superintendent of schools, he found a district with a 1 percent dropout rate. Seventy-five percent of seniors from the district’s three high schools –– Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham –– went on to four-year colleges, and another 22 percent to two-year colleges.

At its January meeting, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education honored six members of the Central District girls’ swim team, the Sharks, for their outstanding performances at the county and state championship meets. Although temperatures are beginning to dip below the freezing point outside, some Bellmore-Merrick residents are looking for ice indoors.
At the Newbridge Ice Arena, at Newbridge Road Park in Bellmore, a new semester of ice-skating lessons and hockey clinics recently began, along with the start of winter seasons for organized teams. The arena also offers seasonal activities for recreational skaters during public sessions.

Class will be in session for students in every school district in the Merricks on days that were originally slated for February break, officials say.
The boards of education of the Merrick, North Merrick and Bellmore-Merrick Central High School Districts have all approved changes to their schools’ calendars, which were devised to make up instructional days lost in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. In each of the three districts, Feb. 20, 21 and 22 were officially made school days for students, in addition to other adjustments.

Bellmore-Merrick parents and school officials said they are mourning the 26 people killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School last week, with the mass murder in Newtown, Conn., prompting local administrators to examine security procedures at the 19 schools across the Bellmores and Merricks.

When Hurricane Sandy struck on Oct. 29, it severely damaged a number of Town of Hempstead facilities in the Bellmore-Merrick area. Repair work is under way, but it could be some time before they are up and running again. Particularly hard hit were the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve, the Sanitation Department and the Merrick Senior Center.

As everyone knows, the East Coast was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy on Oct. 29. People lost power. Many lost their homes. Some even lost their lives.
