Cougar Nation had a lot to smile about last Sunday. All of Bellmore-Merrick’s seniors celebrated their high school experiences while looking forward to the future at commencement exercises for Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham on June 23. For the third straight year, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District held three separate graduation ceremonies at the NYCB Theater in Westbury, and officials said that each school had about 335 graduates. more
Grand Avenue Middle School eighth-graders celebrated two years of study and discussed their futures in high school at their Moving-Up Day. Students said their final goodbyes to Grand Avenue at one of four ceremonies on June 7. Each program featured student speakers and performances by the school choir. more

They are: from Calhoun High School, William Mansmann, valedictorian, and Julianne Ciccone, salutatorian; Kennedy, Eric Fegan, valedictorian, and Jordan Liebman, salutatorian; Mepham, Connor Garet, valedictorian, and Brandon Needelman, salutatorian. more
The Barbie doll, long lambasted as a caricature of the modern woman — impossibly thin, vacuous, at times scantily dressed — may be good for girls’ diets. That was the surprising finding of a science research project conducted over the past year by Rebecca Jellinek, 16, a junior at Kennedy High School in Bellmore. Jellinek questioned 104 local girls, ages 6 to 8, about their food preferences after they played with one of two dolls — Barbie or Tracy Turnblad, the “full-figured” leading character in the movie musical “Hairspray.” more
Kennedy’s 12-10 record on the baseball diamond isn’t the right indicator to look at when determining how many heads the Cougars turned this spring. Instead, it may be best to look at the team’s postseason run — they gave top-seeded MacArthur a run for its money in the quarterfinals and knocked off Mepham in the first round with a stunning comeback from a six-run deficit. more

Newsweek recently ranked all three of the Central District’s high schools –– Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham –– among the top 600 high schools in the nation –– out of more than 26,000 high schools. A group of a half-dozen Mepham High School parents spoke out at the May 8 Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education meeting, calling on the district to replace the old wooden visitors bleachers at the Mepham football field. A number of the seats have worn out or rotted through, and parents said they believe someone will eventually fall from the bleachers and get hurt unless they are fixed. more
