Army Sgt. 1st Class Kevin Lipari, 39, of Baldwin, died on Dec. 14 while serving in the Logar province of Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said last week. Lipari was assigned to the HHC 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, a part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

When the 26 students in Calhoun High School’s leadership class were batting around ideas for a community service project in November, they didn’t debate their cause –– they wanted to do something, anything, to aid those whose homes had been ravaged by Hurricane Sandy.
And when they went looking for possible projects, they thought immediately of Long Beach, which took the brunt of the storm, suffering an estimated $250 million in damage.

After rallying with a pair of late second-half goals to capture the Nassau Class A girls’ soccer championship, winning the Long Island title on penalty kicks, and squeezing out a 1-0 victory in a state semifinal, South Side’s exclamation point on a near-perfect season came without drama or doubt.
