Andrew Cuomo came to the home of a Lynbrook family to sign New York’s first property tax cap on June 30 — six days after the State Senate approved the legislation that proponents say will usher in a new era of fiscal responsibility. Nassau County’s 5th Precinct, based at 1655 Dutch Broadway in Elmont, recently redeployed three officers from its Problem Oriented Policing unit, in compliance with a county plan to reduce costs and prevent tax hikes.

County cuts hit 5th Precinct POP unit

For nearly two decades, the 5th Precinct’s Problem Oriented Policing unit has generally consisted of a group of four officers, who the community has become comfortable working closely with and, most importantly, trusted. That relationship changed severely last Monday, when three of the unit’s officers were reassigned to the 5th Precinct’s patrol unit, in compliance with a plan created by County Executive Ed Mangano to reduce the county’s costs and prevent further tax increases. more

County Executive Ed Mangano announced a plan last Monday to reduce the costs of Nassau County government. The plan includes restructuring the Nassau County Police Department by redeploying 166 employees, including 109 officers, 19 supervisors and 38 civilian employees.
