Kennedy High School students recently helped One Is Greater Than None, a non-profit group created by JFK students, to raise more than $3,500 to supply free health care to Americans in need. The Calhoun girls’ varsity badminton team recently won the Nassau County Championship with a 4-3 victory over Great Neck South. The Calhoun girls finished the season with a 15-0 record –– and their second straight championship. Team Captain Christina Strezenec won the overall singles title, beating out all other Nassau badminton players in a two-day tournament. With this win, Strezenec became the only player in Calhoun history to win four county titles playing a varsity sport. more

A second public meeting was held on May 12 regarding the village’s proposal to rezone the industrial area in East Rockaway (see box for more details) — this time in a larger venue, the East Rockaway High School auditorium, to accomodate residents who wanted to voice their concerns — or their support. The first meeting, held on April 23 at Rocco’s Catering Hall, was filled to capacity and the village had to turn away residents who waited on the block-long line. The first meeting, as the second, lasted three hours. more
