Nassau County’s latest gun buy back program, held at Shiloh Baptist Church on N. Centre Avenue last Saturday morning, got 173 illegal operable guns off the street. The five buy back events in different Nassau County communities have so far collected over 1,470 weapons. Law enforcement pays $200 for each gun, and $14,600 has been distributed to date — money that has been seized from criminals.

Nassau County First Squad detectives arrested a Rockville Centre man, Leonard Griffin, 40, of Ongley Street after he allegedly confronted a 27-year-old man on the side of his Merrick Road home during an attempt to get into the house through the back door.

Many people have been asking the clergy in Rockville Centre how best to respond to the devastation and need in Haiti after the recent earthquake. Many have given to their religious relief programs or to a charity with which they are familiar. We encourage all to keep those organizations in mind for continuing their work in Haiti. In a bid to get illegal guns off the street, this Saturday, Jan. 30, between 9 a.m. and noon, the Nassau County DA’s office and county police department, in conjunction with the Village of Rockville Centre and its police department, will hold a gun buyback program at Shiloh Baptist Church, 96 N. Centre Ave. Gun owners who want to surrender their illegal, operable handguns will be able to, anonymously and with no questions asked, and will receive $200.
