Drivers on Merrick Avenue in North Merrick may have noticed that a large construction project is under way at Camp Avenue Elementary School.
The work is part of a $1.2 million capital project that was approved by North Merrick voters last December. Of that money, $552,000 was slated for exterior repairs at the Camp Avenue and Old Mill Road schools.

The 100th day of school has been celebrated in elementary schools for over a decade. Typically, children collect items by the hundreds to mark the occasion. When 7-year-old Finnegan Corcoran-Doolin was told his first-grade class at Reinhard Elementary School in Bellmore would celebrate the 100th day of school, he jumped into action.

Lately, students in one of Jennifer Meschkow’s sixth-grade classes at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick, co-taught by Susan Holland, have been checking clothing labels to see the countries where the apparel was manufactured. Then the students use the Internet to look up working conditions in the countries, with a focus on whether child-labor laws are abused.

In 1952, Merokean Jerome Medowar was a 22-year-old recent graduate of Long Island University, living with his parents on Hedge Lane, off Merrick Road, just west of Cammans Pond. So Medowar had a perfect vantage point to observe construction that year of Lakeside Elementary School, which became Norman J. Levy-Lakeside Elementary School after the death in 1998 of the popular state senator.
