Moolala, in the Merrick Commons Shopping Center, will donate a portion of its proceeds from every purchase on Thursday, May 26, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., to the Bellmore-Merrick Wellness Council’s fourth annual post-prom party, to be held in June.

The annual Bellmore-Merrick American Cancer Society Relay for Life took place on May 21 at Merrick Road Park. In total, 325 people participated in relay, and the event raised more than $48,000.

Two Nassau County Police officers revved up the motor on a device not much larger than a lawnmower engine. As the machine roared last Wednesday afternoon, the officers used its cutters to slowly peel off the driver’s side door of a badly damaged minivan. No one was inside the van, but students at Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville watched quietly and anxiously as the “Jaws of Life” crushed the car’s metal.

The Bellmore-Merrick Basketball League recently honored its 2011 fifth-grade championship team. Members of the squad included, above, in alphabetical order, Ben Birke, Josh Kaplan, Jordan Kappel, Matthew Kelman, James King, Ian Kranis, Dylan Krieff, Ali Nabi, James Rogan and Matt Spector. Assistant coaches were Adam Kappel and Lenny Kaplan; head coach was Nancy Kaplan.

In early June, Calhoun High School senior Erin Zseller will head to the war-ravaged nation of Uganda as part of a two-week volunteer mission sponsored by the non-profit organization Invisible Children.
Zseller was chosen from a pool of 10 Calhoun applicants, and she will be the fourth student from the school to make the trip to Uganda in the past three years.
