On Aug. 5, I traveled to ground zero in Lower Manhattan to photograph the epicenter of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil, nearly 10 years later. As I scaled the subway steps leading to Vesey Street, on the north side of what had been the World Trade Center before September 11, 2001, I was uncertain what to expect when I reached the top of the staircase. The last time that I visited ground zero, in August 2006, I felt forlorn. It was a hauntingly empty place. What would I find this time?

For the protection of motorists, closure of all eastbound travel lanes on Front Street/NY Route 102 between William Street in Hempstead Village and NY Route 24/Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow in the Town of Hempstead, are now in effect and will continue each weekday night for approximately three weeks, weather permitting. Eastbound travel lanes are being closed between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and no on-street parking is permitted. Violators will be towed. To minimize the impact on traffic, westbound travel lanes remain open to motorists.
