District 13 students entertained a crowd of a few dozen people who braved the cold for the annual North Valley Stream tree lighting on Dec. 8. The event was hosted by Friends of North Valley Stream at the Matthew Giglio Plaza at Dutch Broadway and North Corona Avenue.

Village officials have taken action to replace a deteriorating culvert on Valley Stream Boulevard, approving a $1.176 million construction project. The culvert carries a stream under the road, where it then runs through the Village Green.

A cab driver was robbed and carjacked in North Valley Stream early Thursday morning. According to police, the driver, a 50-year-old man employed by Laurelton Taxi of Queens, was taking a passenger to an address on North Fletcher Avenue.

The northbound lanes of the Wantagh Parkway will be closed between Jones Beach and Merrick Road until 7 p.m. on Nov. 18. New York State Parks Deputy Regional Director George Gorman said to expect intermittent closures on the southbound side for no more than 10 minutes at a time. The parkway is facing closures because of a movie that is being filmed there.

The fourth annual Alex’s Run For a Reason fundraiser took place this past Saturday at Newbridge Road Park in Bellmore to great success.
About 500 people turned out to take part in the day’s activities, and the event raised more than $26,000.
