A new science lab opens at the Davison Avenue Elementary School

Posted

When Malverne’s Davison Avenue Elementary School opened its doors as an intermediate school serving grades 3 and 4, one of the most exciting changes students and teachers noticed was the creation of a dedicated science room that will serve as a hands-on learning lab for all classes.

The lab is equipped with microscopes, a SMART Board, and an Elmo digital projector that can be used to project magnified specimens on the SMART Board.

The room has a number of stations for studying geology, physics, chemistry and biology, all closely aligned with the state science curriculum. A few of the hands-on projects planned for students this year include creating weather vanes, making three-dimensional models of the solar system, using electrical currents to create magnets, observing the metamorphosis of caterpillars into butterflies and growing their own seeds to observe plant germination.

Students will be working closely with their classroom teachers to learn the proper procedures for conducting scientific research. During the course of each lesson, teachers work with the entire class to introduce new concepts and explain the six elements of the scientific method before allowing students to break into smaller groups to conduct their own experiments.
