Even as the first building is being rented at a fast pace and a second building is already in the works as an addition to the AvalonBay Rockville Centre community, a number of village officials attended the Banks Avenue apartment complex’s grand opening on the evening of Sept. 22.

As workers complete the last 210 apartments in the first building, construction is under way just across the road on another 139 apartments. According to Chris Capece, development director of AvalonBay, officials expect to have occupants in the second building by April or May of 2012.

Soil, which had elevated concentrations of contaminants, has been removed from the site and replaced. Capece said the process of remediation of the former brownfield is in the documentation stage with the DEC — the final stage of the cleanup.
