Senior softball

Senior softball players are wanted for Tuesday and Friday “pick-up” games at Lister Field in Rockville Centre, starting April 2 through November, from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information call Bob Simmons at (516) 764-1011 or (516) 984-9346.

Limoge box exhibit

Small boxes have been used for centuries to contain cosmetics, beauty patches, hair, powder, salves, jewelry and many other uses.These small treasures were made of all sorts of material.The Rockville Centre Museum has the Mr.& Mrs. Michael J. Gibbons collection of handpainted porcelain limoge boxes acquired in Paris on display at the Phillips House Museum, 28 Hempstead Ave. through May 2. Also included are contemporary Faberge Eggs produced at the Faberge Factory by selected artists and Russian Lacquered boxes.The museum is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. There is no charge for admission, but donations are always welcome.Call Frank Seipp at (5160 764-7459 for more information.

Birth, baby and beyond

On April 10, Mercy Medical Center will host a day-long educational seminar for those planning a family or already expecting. From 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. the conference will feature exhibits, workshops and presentations by physicians, nurses and staff addressing various aspects of childbirth, including labor, delivery, breast feeding and parenting. Workshop presentations will include information on pain management during labor, basics of newborn care, infant nutrition, car seat safety and a “Daddy Boot Camp” providing tips and strategies for fathers. Registration of $10 per person or $15 per couple includes continental breakfast and lunch, along with free raffles, give-aways and door prizes. Action Sports Medicine & Pain Management, 1010 Sunrise Highway will host a pain clinic to offer consultations for neck and back pain as well as conduct non-surgical management of orthopedic problems and sports injuries.The clinic, will be open on April 10 and the second and fourth Saturday from 10 a.m. -1 p.m.. Action Sports Medicine & Pain Management also seeks volunteers in this endeavor. Physicians who are Board Certified in Physical Medicine, rehabilitation or pain management should call (516) 294-5872 if interested in volunteering to assist with these complimentary clinics. Special Poetry Event

Molloy College and its Writer-in-Residence, Barbara Novack, will host a National Poetry Month event on April 11 at 2: 30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room, Wilbur Arts Center on Molloy ‘s Rockville Centre campus. This event is free and open to the public. The event will celebrate “Long Island Sounds 2009,” the poetry anthology edited by Tammy Nuzzo-Morgan, Poet Laureate of Suffolk County, and will feature readings by 38 contributors. Nassau Woman’s Club meeting

Indoor Flea Market and Giant Book Sale

“Blithe Spirit”

The Footlight Players of The Church of The Ascension, 71 N. Village Ave. will present this witty comedy classic in the church Parish Hall on April 16 -18 and April 23 – 25. Reaffirming human rights for all

April 18 at 3 p.m. in the Hays Theatre, Wilbur Arts Center, Molloy College.e. The global initiatives of many organizations is to help the homeless and the helpless. Local and international groups who try to alleviate poverty through incremental stops, will present their global effort a to assist and improve the lives of the invisible and desperate populations. Religion and politics always play a role with the non-governmental organizations. Representatives from Doctors without Borders, The World Bank, Catholic Relief Services, Felician and Molloy colleges will speak. Spring luncheon and fashion show

The Rockville Centre Auxiliary is hosting a Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show on April 20 at Noon, at the Pompei Restaurant in West Hempstead. Tickets are $35 and will include a charitable contribution to the (AHRC) Nassau to benefit both children and adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. Oil painting demonstration

The Village Art Club will welcome artist Bart DeCeclie, who will demonstrate an oil painting on April 22 at 7 p.m. at the Rockville Centre Library, 221 N. Village Ave., in the downstairs meeting room.  DeCeclie is an accomplished artist, illustrator, and teacher. Admission is free and open to members and non-members alike. Community health fair

The Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring its 2nd annual community health fair on April 24 at the Recreation Center, 111 N. Oceanside Road between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Annual Scholarship Dinner

On May 6, the Hispanic Brotherhood of Rockville Centre will hold its annual fundraiser at Temple B’nai Sholom, 100 Hempstead Ave. Cocktails start at 6:30; dinner at 8 p.m. The donation is $110 per person of which $36 is tax exempt. The National Council of Jewish Women’s South Shore and Long Island sections will host their annual luncheon on May 5 at 11:30 a.m. at Temple Avodah in Oceanside. Top of DeMott Goods and Services Auction

Central Synagogue, 430 DeMott Ave. will hold a live auction on May 8 at 8:30 p.m. (the preview of goods starts at 7:30 p.m.) along with hot and cold hors d’oeuvres and desserts. Admission is $18. Some of the items that will be auctioned include a country club golf outing, Willy Mays memorabilia, a handcrafted kayak, a Gibson guitar, Yankees/Giants/Jets/Mets tickets, a weekend at a Glen Cove mansion, a window decorating service, a Webber barbeque grill, signed artwork and handmade decorative pillows, throws and scarves. Rec Center Nursery School

registration - Registrations are now being accepted for the RVC Recreation Center’s Nursery School programs fro the 2010-11 school year. Pre-K classes for those entering kindergarten in Sept. 2011 are offered five days a week from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from, 12:15 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Pre-Pre-K classes for those entering kindergarten in Sept. 2012 are offered Monday through Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. or Tuesday and Thursday from 12:15 to 2:45 p.m. To schedule an appointment to visit the school, call the Recreation Center office at (516) 678-9338.

AARP Tax Assistance Program:

Representatives from the AARP Tax

Assistance Program will be at the Sandel Senior Center every Friday morning from 9:00am to 12 noon. You must make an appointment by calling the Sandel Senior Center. This service is available to RVC Seniors 60+.

St. Francis Hospital Community Outreach Program

April 9 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.. A new, state-of-the-art mobile office will be on hand to provide free health screenings that include a brief cardiac history, blood pressure and a simple test for cholesterol and diabetes. Appropriate patient education and referrals are available. For adults 18 and over.

Lions Recycle

The Sandel Center is now an official drop-off point for used or broken prescription eyeglasses, non-prescription sunglasses, old hearing aids and old cell phones. Donations can be brought to the Senior Center Mon-Fri from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sandel Senior Men’s Club:

The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. for breakfast and business. At 11 a.m., when available, guest speakers discuss topics of interest to men. A variety of trips and programs are scheduled for July and August.

Religious Events

Special Needs Mass

The Parish of St. Agnes welcomes all to its monthly Mass for special needs children of all ages and their families. The next Mass is on April 24. These Masses are held on Saturdays at 5 p.m. in the Lower Hall of the Msgr. Melton Auditorium which is handicapped accessible.
