Affordable housing forum
The League of Women Voters of Central Nassau presents an affordable housing forum on Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Hempstead Public Library, lcoated at 115 Nichols Court in Hempstead, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a panel discussion on making housing affordable for Long Island families, how financial instutitions can support the housing market, grants and funding for housing, the impacto f the economy on the housing market, and development and renovation of existing properties. Free medical equipment
The National Amputation Foundation, located at 40 Church St. in Malverne, has a free donated durable medical equipment give-a-way program open to anyone in need. Equipment includes wheelchairs, walkers, shower chairs, commodes, crutches and canes. Items must be picked up at the office. Please call (516) 887-3600 for more information.

Trash & treasure sale
The Malverne Historical & Preservation Society will be hosting a trash and treasure sale on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Joseph L. Landers Memorial Restoration, located at 369 Ocean Ave. The sale will include artwork, crafts, books, jewelry, baby items, antiques, attic treasures and more brand new and gently used items. Vendors are wanted. Vendors must supply their own tables and pay a $25 fee per space. To reserve a space call (516) 792-1910. The rain date will be Sunday, Oct. 17.

Musical performances
The Rockville Centre Guild for the Arts proudly presents "13," a new musical with an unforgettable rock score from Tony Award winning Jason Robert Brown.  Performances are: Oct. 22 at 8 p.m., Oct. 23 at 3 and 8 p.m., and  Oct. 24 at 3 p.m. at South Side Middle School, located at 67 Hillside Ave. in Rockville Centre. Malverne Fall Festival

Farmingdale High School reunion

Halloween party
The Knights of Columbus, St. Mary’s/Maris Stella Council, are hosting an adult Halloween party on Oct. 23 at 8 p.m. at 78 Hempstead Ave. in Lynbrook. The cost is $45 per person or $80 per couple. Freedom Fund Awards Gala
The NAACP's Lakeview branch will hold its 24th annual Freedom Fund Awards Gala celebration on Friday, Oct. 22, at the Marriott Hotel, located at 101 James Doolittle Blvd. in Uniondale. Irish story telling
The Irish Cultural Society will feature seanachie (story teller) Jim Hawkins at its Oct. 19 meeting at the Garden City Library, located at 60 Seventh St., across the street from the Garden City Hotel. The next step
Are you looking for support as you move forward after the death of a loved one? If so, we invite you to join us at 7:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month in the Rectory Meeting Room. These sessions are for — but not limited to — those who have completed our 8-week bereavement course. Tot's night out
Bring your children, ages 18 months to 5 years (pre-kindergarten), to the library for an hour of interactive preschool family time with Donna Green on Wednesday, Oct. 20, from 7 to 8 p.m. There will be singing, dancing, school readiness and a simple craft. AARP Driver Safety
The library is offering a two-part AARP Driver Safety Class for seniors. The classes will take place on Oct. 19 and 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Please bring your driver’s license. The cost for AARP members is $12 and for non-members, $14, payable by check at registration.

Murder and Madness and Poe
Join the library and actor David Houston on Monday, Oct. 25, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. for a 70-minute dramatic and spooky tour-de-force in which Edgar Allan Poe auditions for a reading tour. With the eerie chamber music of Psycho composer, Bernard Herrmann. Perfect for the Halloween season! This is an adult program.

Simply Stronger
Join certified fitness instructor Marilyn Bunger for six sessions of a low-impact, effective and safe exercise program that builds muscular strength. Bring hand weights or substitute two cans of soup or bottled water. Wear sneakers and comfortable clothing. The sessions take place on Thursdays, Oct. 28 and Nov. 4, from 1 to 2 p.m. There is a $15 non-refundable fee by check for all six sessions. In person registration only.

Computer kindergarten for adults
A hands-on program for novice computer users, provided by Sharper Training Solutions, will be offered at the library on Tuesday, Oct. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. The slow-paced, user-friendly workship will focus on the basics of computer navigation, using the mouse, saving files and Windows.  A $10 fee is due at registration.

Computer 1st grade for adults
The library will hold a computer workshop for adults in which they will learn how to work with text including inputting, inserting, moving and erasing, basic word processing skills, commands and dialog boxes, and setup and creation of email. It will take place on Nov .18, from 2 to 4 p.m. There is a $10 fee, to be paid in person by check only. Registration begins Oct. 28 for cardholders.

Defensive driving course
Join the library for two AARP defensive driving sessions on Oct. 28 and Nov. 4 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Those with AARP membership cards will pay $12, those without will pay $14.

Home Improvement Series
The schedule of the Home Improvement Series designed to educate homeowners is as follows:
■    Maintaining an oil-fired heating system: Oct. 18, 7 to 10 p.m. Gain a basic understanding of residential oil heating that covers indoor and outdoor oil tanks with emphasis on hot water hydronics, warm air and steam heating.
■    Basic plumbing: Oct. 25, 7 to 9 p.m. Learn practical tips and instruction on how to fix a leaking faucet and clear a drain stoppage.
■    Effective energy tips: Nov. 1, 7 to 9 p.m. Tired of sky-high utility bills? Learn tried and true methods of making your house more energy efficient.
■    Basic electricity: Nov. 8, 7 to 9 p.m. Review electrical safety practices, proper use of a multimeter and how to remove and replace a switch and receptacle. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI’s) will also be introduced.
■    Basic carpentry skills: Nov. 15, 7 to 10 p.m. Even if you’re all thumbs, you’ll finish this course with confidence. Learn how to use basic hand tools as well as the safe way to use power equipment.

Events and Activities

Concert schedule
All concerts take place on Sundays at 2 p.m. and are free.

  • Oct. 24: Jennifer Hope. Her beautiful soprano voice celebrates the movie and Broadway songs that have kept us singing for the last six decades.
  • Nov. 7: Defibrillators. Playing their original (and often times hilarious) music will have you smiling from ear to ear long after the performance.

Special presentation
In celebration of Italian-American Heritage month, join us for “In the Shadow of the Mountain,” on Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. Storyteller Lou Del Bianco portrays his grandfather Luigi Del Bianco and tells the story of his unique contribution to the carving of our nation's greatest monument, Mount Rushmore. He’ll take us back in time and we’ll learn about Italian culture, immigration and geography as well as the history of the monument itself. All ages are welcome.

Vampirism in the cinema
Cinema historian and professional cinematographer Jim Knusch will present a discussion on vampires and the film Dracula, and stills and film clips will illustrate stories of the earliest vampire in films as well as the current waves of cinematic bloodsuckers, like the Twilight series. The event is free and will take place on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.

Join the library for 10 sessions of daytime yoga on Wednesdays at noon running through Dec. 22. Present a $30 check payable to the library.

Hospital outreach bus
St. Francis Hospital‘s Community Outreach Bus provides free health screenings for those age 18 and over. The screenings, which will be available at the library on Oct. 28 at noon, include a brief cardiac history, blood pressure and a simple blood test for cholesterol and diabetes.

Pajama storytime
Every first Monday of the month kids ages 3 to 5, can bring a teddy bear and a grown-up for stories, songs and a craft from 7 to 7:30 p.m.

Story times
Storytimes for children from ages 1 year through grade 2 run through Oct. 20 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Stop by the children's room desk for a schedule to find the appropriate session for your child.

Bilingual story times
Bilingual story times in Spanish and English are Tuesdays, October 19 and 26, from 7 to 7:45 p.m. for kids 3 to 6 years old and their parents.

Infants and parents
Babies up to 12 months old and their parents are invited to Infants and Parents with Nettie Becker on Fridays, Oct. 22 and 29, from 10 to 11 a.m.

Learn Facebook & Twitter at the library on Tuesdays in October from 5 to 7 p.m. Those interested can take up to four one-hour, one-on-one sessions with a librarian. Pre-registration required.

Annual art exhibit
The 21st Annual Art Expressions Exhibition will be on display at the Lakeview Public Library’s children’s room through Oct. 31. Call the library for more information.

Join the library for Wednesday Morning Brunch on Wednesdays in October from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Have a snack, make new friends and discuss the issues of the day, whether it's last night’s game, the latest news or what’s going on in town. Kids’ Programming

Daytime story time
Children are invited to hear the librarian read engaging stories and do story-related activities. Story times are on Wednesdays in October from 10 to 11 a.m. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.  Daycares are welcome.

Write yourself Thursdays
Children between the ages of 7 and 11 can explore the art and benefits of journaling and writing their own stories on Thursday, Oct. 21, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Children can create their own stories during this interactive workshop in a journal that the library will provide or in their own journal.

Game day Tuesdays
Children in grades 6 and under can relax after the school week and enjoy a day of board games or trivia games and some friendly competition on Tuesday, Oct. 19, from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. You can even win a prize.

Playtime Wednesdays
Play is important for the development of children and the library is a perfect place to explore the possibilities. Children are invited to come and play with other children on Wednesday, Oct. 20, from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m.

Kids in the kitchen
On Saturday, Oct. 16, from 12:30 to 2 p.m., children between the ages of 7 and 11 can come to the Lakeview Public Library to learn how to make a special treat they will be happy to eat. Learn the basics of cooking while having fun. Register in advance.

Decorate a cupcake
Children in grades 6 and under can decorate cupcakes just in time for Halloween. Get ready to celebrate by coming to this cupcake decorating program on Wednesday, Oct. 27 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Spooky movie
A spooky movie for the spooky holiday will be shown at the Lakeview Public Library on Saturday, Oct. 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for children in grades 6 and under. Register by calling or visiting the library.

Teens’ Programming

College prep presentation
Join the library for a workshop on what high school juniors and seniors and parents should know before they make a major decision about higher education. The workshop will be held on Monday, Oct. 18 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Fall and Halloween craft
Teens in grades 7 to 12 can come to the Lakeview Public Library to decorate a pumpkin on Thursday, Oct. 21 from 5 to 6 p.m. Sign up by Oct. 18.

Teen movie night
Teens in grades 7 to 12 can join the library for a movie and munchies on Monday, Oct. 25 from 6 to 7:45 p.m.
