DEC issues no fines for dunes work

The City of Long Beach was not issued any fines for work that was done on the dunes near Illinois Avenue, according to Aphrodite Montalvo, a spokeswoman for the New York State Department of Conservation.

The city was issued a notice of violation by the DEC in late August for doing work that was not covered under its permit, including excavating and operating heavy machinery on three areas of the dunes, which had vegetation growing on them.

The DEC and the city met at a Sept. 24 compliance conference and will send a follow up letter to the city indicating “what restoration activities will be required to come into compliance with the state,”Montalvo said.
