District 13 Board of Education trustee Thomas Speranza has resigned. He is moving out of Valley Stream to North Carolina.

Speranza submitted a letter to District Clerk Denise Michels and fellow trustees on May 18. His resignation took effect immediately. “It has been an honor and privilege to have worked with all of you in my capacity as a trustee on the board,” he wrote.

His departure creates a vacancy on the seven-member board. The board will accept resumés, conduct interviews, and appoint someone to fill Speranza’s seat for the rest of his term, which expires in June 2011. Joseph DiSibio, president of the Board of Education, said he hopes to make an appointment by the end of the summer, so the board is back at full strength for the start of the 2010-11 school year. “We don’t to have a six-member board,” he said.

Although there were no contested races for the two seats up this year, DiSibio expressed hope that there would be someone interested in serving on the board.

Speranza was first elected in May 2008.
