East Meadow slammed by nor'easter

A massive nor'easter out of the west swept across Long Island  early Monday, covering East Meadow in blankets of snow that continued to fall in large gusts as of Monday at noon.

Forecasters say the storm could drop up to a foot or more of snow across the area by Tuesday, with wind gusts expected to reach 30 to perhaps as high as 60 miles per hour.

In the East Meadow Moms and Dads Facebook page, a few residents shared concerns that their streets had not yet been plowed as of Monday morning.

County and town officials urged people to stay off the roads during the storm if they could, as conditions were already “treacherous” by Monday morning.

“Wind is going to play a significant role in this storm,” said County Executive Laura Curran at a news conference Sunday. “We're talking about blizzard-like conditions . . . It's going to be heavy, wet snow with a lot of wind.”

The biggest snow fall will come between 10 a.m. and 11 p.m. Monday. The South Shore is expected to be the “most vulnerable,” Curran said. “As the day goes on, conditions are going to get more dangerous for driving.”

Late Sunday night, the East Meadow School District shared that school would be closed and students would have a traditional snow day. It shared on its Twitter page, "Due to the impending storm, school is cancelled tomorrow, Feb. 1. All after-school and evening activities are also cancelled. Enjoy the snow day!"

The East Meadow Cross Country and Track and Field team shared on its Twitter account a message encouraging its athletes to take advantage of the day off of school by excercising.

"So what are you doing to improve from yesterday?," the message reads. "Core, yoga, treadmill, elliptical, shoveling your parents’ and neighbors’ driveways, looking up a new, indoor workout? Keep in mind — someone you will have to race soon IS going to be putting in the work today."

Other residents took the day to spend time with family. "We hope you have the best snow day birthday ever," wrote Richie Krug Jr., the president of the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce, in a post wishing his wife, Taleen, a happy 33rd birthday. Krug, left, and Taleen, braced the windy snowfall to take a celebratory selfie with their children Christian, 5, and Mackenzie, 3.
