‘Annie’ to play SSMS on April 16, 17

It’s been almost 20 years since America’s favorite singing, dancing red-headed orphan graced the stage of the South Side Middle School, and this weekend she’ll be back, and better than ever before.

“Annie,” one of Broadway’s most beloved musicals plays for two performances — this Friday, April 16 at 4:30 p.m., and this Saturday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m.

It was spring1993 when South Side Middle School audiences first heard the immortal strains of “Tomorrow” belted out from the stage (by then 6th grader Pam Rice) and 2010 audiences will be thrilled when current seventh grader, Quinn Lysaght takes up the mantel and the red curly wig, and brings this American icon to musical life.

Joining her are eighth graders Taylor Levy as the conniving and delicious Miss Hannigan and Nicholas Mercotrigiano as wealthy Wall Street industrialist Oliver (Daddy) Warbucks. (South Side audiences may remember them as the romantic leads of last season’s blockbuster production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie”) and a cast of over 40 South Side student performers.

With a score brimming over with hits, including “It’s A Hard Knock Life,” “Maybe,” “Little Girls” and of course, the eponymous “Tomorrow” and a cast of colorful characters, this musical comic strip come to life should delight audiences of all ages.

Dr. Brian F. Zuar (South Side’s own Max Bialistock) has once again assembled a top notch production team to mount the musical extravaganza; Director/Choreographer/Musical Director Jon Grodeski (returning for his 18th year); Technical Director Victor Lee; Production Stage Manager Jim Donoghue and Business Manager Dory Mayr. For information, call (516) 255-8925 — and remember, “Tomorrow” is only a day away.
