Rockville Centre Historical Society

The Museum of the Village of Rockville Centre invites one and all to visit and enjoy the historic restoration at 28 Hempstead Ave. Summer hours are Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and also by appointment for groups. On display are kitchen tools, carpentry tools, period furniture, pharmaceutical collectibles and much more. The Victorian Garden is in full bloom for all to enjoy. There is no fee. Blood Drive at MMC

Mercy Medical Center invites and encourages members of the community to participate in a Blood Drive to support Long Island Blood Services on July 29 from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. on the first floor of the St. Anne’s building on the hospital campus.To register call Jeannie Jaeger at (516) 705-2589.

Village Summer Concert

On Aug. 12 at 7:30 p.m., Plaza Theatrical Productions will present “Go’in Hollywood” on the Village Green at Maple and Lee avenues. Bring a law chair or a blanket to sit on. In case of rain, the concert wil be held indoors at the Recreation Center, 111 N. Oceanside Road.

3-on-3 Basketball Tournament

On Aug. 14 the tournament will feature a sports raffle and lively competition. Doors open at noon; tip-off is at 1 p.m. at the Recreation Center, 111 N.Oceanside Road. The event benefits Hoops 4 Hope Charity and will show which team has what it takes to win. Final Nutcracker audition

On Aug. 17, Leggz Ltd. Dance, 222 Sunrise Highway, will hold auditions for classically trained men and women for the annual full-length production of the “Nutcracker Suite” ballet with the South Shore Symphony Orchestra. Professional principal performers are paid. There is a $20 audition fee. Call (516) 766-7171 for an appointment.

A Taste of Israel

Generation Next, the young leadership division of the American Friends of Beit Issie Shapiro will hold its third annual ‘Taste of Israel’ wine tasting on Aug.18 at Eden Gallery (437 Madison Avenue). Founded in 1981, Beit Issie Shapiro is a center in Ra’anana, Israel that works with children and adults with special needs. It provides state of the art therapy for individuals with developmental disabilities, and training and support for their families. Through direct services, groundbreaking research and training, Beit Issie Shapiro impacts the lives of over 30,000 people internationally every year. Generation Next is seeking partners who support the commitment of young leaders to improving the lives of others in our society. The Library’s Career Center is now open on Saturdays. Five computers available for your job search needs. All computers are equipped with Win-Way Resume Preparation software, MS Word and Office programs. Internet access and bookmarked job search Web sites. Printing available for resumes and cover letters. 11 a.m. Designed for children ages 15-35 months along with their parents/caregivers who have previously participated in Parent/Child Workshop. Participants must pre-register in the Children’s Room.

Jewelry Making

2-3 p.m.. Children in grades three and up should register in the Children’s Room for this hands-on jewelry workshop.

Summer Programs

Summer programs: Baseball School, Girls Basketball Clinic, Boys and Girls Lacrosse Camps, RVC Rec “Ultimate Gymnastic School,” Mad Science Camps, Cartoon-Time, Computer Explorer, Tennis Lessons, Happy Piano Adventure and assorted Gymnastics clinics have started. The Summer Playground Program, in its 56th consecutive year, is also under way and will run through Aug. 12. The center also offers tennis on its courts that are open seven days a week from 8 a.m. through dusk, aerobic exercise classes and summer birthday parties for village residents from ages 2-12. Call the Rec Center for schedules and fees.

Fall program registration began

on July 26

All village residents should have received their 2010-11 annual Recreation Department brochure. It lists all the programs offered by the Recreation Department for pre-schoolers through senior citizens. Everyone is encouraged to register early, as most programs have enrollment limits. AARP Defensive Driving:

Aug. 12 and Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. You must attend both evenings. This course is open to Sandel members and residents of Rockville Centre. $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-AARP members. Call the center for availability.

SPECIAL EVENTS:

Thursday Evenings are Back with TaiChi from 4:15-5:15 and Yoga from 5:30-6:30. Both classes are taught by a certified instructor. $5 per session for non-members. A “Lite Bite” dinner is available for purchase.

Headlines with Carol Carlton:

Mondays at 2 p.m. A lively discussion on topics pulled from today’s headlines. $5 per session for non-members.

Young at Heart

Celebrating all 90 -year olds: July 30 at 1 p.m. A Garden Park celebration for all those who have reached the age of 90+. This party is open to the community and costs $4 per person.

Sandel Senior Men’s Club:

The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. for breakfast and business. At 11 a.m., when available, guest speakers discuss topics of interest to men. A variety of trips & programs are scheduled for July and August.
