Community Events

Rockville Centre Historical Society

The Museum of the Village of Rockville Centre invites residents to visit and enjoy the historic restoration at 28 Hempstead Ave. Hours are Saturday and Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and also by appointment for groups. On display are kitchen tools, carpentry tools, period furniture, pharmaceutical collectibles and much more. There is no fee. From Oct. 17 through the beginning of November, the museum will have a special exhibit of Spanish artifacts. Also on exhibit is "Rockville Centre: Past and Present," a collaborative photography exhibit by the Historical Society and Watson Elementary School students. Pumpkin Patch

Pumpkins for sale… at The Pumpkin Patch located at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 200 Hempstead Ave. from Monday – Saturday 10 a.m. –dusk and Sundays from noon – dusk. Open now through Oct. 31. Pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, hay, corn stalks, mums, apples and more. On Oct. 30, from 6-8 p.m. it will be transformed into a “Haunted Patch,” with a visit from Spiderman. Come in costume. Village Art Club Meeting

The Village Art Club is pleased to present a live male model, Jack Holly at its next meeting on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the downstairs meeting room of the Rockville Centre Library, 221 N. Village Ave. Bring your pencils and a sketch pad for a fun evening of drawing. The meeting is free and open to the public. Membership is available to those who wish to join. Halloween bash

The RVC Youth Council is having a Halloween Bash on Oct. 29 at SportSet, 40 Maple Ave. Rockville Centre students and their guests in grades 9-12 are invited. The evening starts at 8 p.m. with refreshments and at 9 p.m. "Ghostbusters" will be shown. There is a charge of $5 per person at the door. For more information, email events@rvcyouthcouncil. org.

St. Agnes Parish Celebration

Mardi Gras - The 48th Annual St. Agnes Parish Celebration on Oct. 30 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the St. Agnes Parish Center. There will be a buffet dinner, open bar, music by "The Stingers," grand prize raffle and a silent auction. $50 per person in advance ($40 for seniors 65 and older) and $60 at the door if available. Fortnightly Club Meeting

On Nov. 2, the Fortnightly Club presents Betsy Gulotta, Nassau Community College professor emeritus and founding member of the Friends of Hempstead Plains. Professor Gulotta will discuss the Past, Present and Future of the Plains. The meeting will take place at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mark's Church on Hempstead Avenue.

A Contradictory Discussion at Molloy: Faith vs. Reason

The Institute of Interfaith Dialogue at Molloy College will host “A Contradictory Discussion Examining Faith Versus Reason” on Nov. 7, at 3 p.m. in the Hays Theatre, Wilbur Arts Center on the Molloy College campus. Join WABC radio commentator and co-host of "Religion on the Line," Kevin McCormack and Dr. Brian Quinn., as they engage in a discussion on two timely thought-provoking and influential literary works — Karen Armstrong’s "The Case for God" and Christopher Hitchens’ "God Is Not Great." Molloy College Author Afternoon featuring Vivian Swift

Molloy College and its Writer-in-Residence, Barbara Novack, will host an Author Afternoon featuring travel memoirist Vivian Swift on Nov. 7 at 3 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room, Wilbur Arts Center on the Molloy College campus. This event is free and open to the public. Swift traveled the world for 20 years, visiting 40 countries before settling on Long Island. Her next decade, filled with the small pleasures of home and life off the road, resulted in her first book, "When Wanderers Cease to Roam." With its hand-lettered text and colorful watercolor illustrations, this unique book was lauded as “one of the gems of the year.” In a multimedia presentation, Swift will discuss living a creative life in the suburbs, her own unlikely path to publication at 52, and give tips for aspiring writers. RVC Homemakers Meeting

The Rockville Centre Chapter of Homemakers (which prides itself in the continued mastery of hand-made items) meets every Tuesday at the John A. Anderson Recreation Center on Oceanside Road at 10 a.m. On Nov. 9 its speaker will be Marion Celenza, author of "Lunch is in the Bag."

Blood drive

Mercy Medical Center is running a blood drive to support Long Island Blood Services on Nov. 9 from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. on the first floor of the St. Anne’s building on the hospital campus. Anyone between the ages of 17 and 75 who is in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Healthy individuals over 75 can donate blood if they present written permission from their physician obtained within two weeks of their donation. Donors should have eaten and should bring reading glasses and ID with signature, and know their Social Security number. Free lecture on pain at Mercy

Mercy Medical Center invites the community to a free lecture on the latest advances in treating chronic and intractable pain on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. Dr. Steven Pinksy, an anesthesiologist specializing in pain management will discuss common pain conditions and identify the most effective interventions to treat them. He will be joined by Dr. Brian Synder, a neurosurgeon who will discuss the treatment of intractable pain with nerve stimulation techniques. The presentations will be conducted in the employee dining room on the lower level of the medical center’s North Pavilion. No advance registration is required. Free parking will be available. Nassau Woman's Club Meeting

AHRC Sunday Brunch

The AHRC Rockville Centre Auxiliary cordially invites residents to attend its brunch on Sunday, Nov. 14 at the Rockville Links at 600 N. Annual Catherine of Siena lecture at Molloy College

Dr. Cheryl Camenzuli and Dr. Lillian Bozak DeLeo, of the Molloy College Siena Women’s Center will host the annual Catherine of Siena Lecture on Nov. 14tat 3 p.m. in the Hays Theatre on the Molloy College Campus. This year’s featured guest will be Dr. Maureen O’Connell, Assistant Professor of Theology, Fordham University, who will present “If These Walls Could Talk: Community Muralism and Social Justice.” This lecture is free and open to the public. “Faces of Long Island:” A call

for photographers

Molloy College will sponsor a juried photography exhibition called “Faces of Long Island.” Organizers are looking for photographers who capture the increasingly rich and diverse Long Island community including minority communities and people of varying ages from all areas of Long Island. Winning entries will be exhibited at Molloy College from December 2010 through spring 2011. All matting and framing costs will be the responsibility of the college. No work will be more than 16 x 20 inches. Each winner will receive an honorarium of $250 and the work will become part of the permanent collection. Black and white and color photographs will be accepted. All submissions are free and should be sent to the college in the form of jpegs along with the artist’s name, title of work, dimensions, medium and date to the following: artgallery@molloy.edu. Fortnightly Club Meeting

Homework Helpers, a partnership program between the Sandel Senior Center Service Corps and the Rockville Centre Public Library offers help with homework to students in grades 1-6 every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between the hours of 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. in the. A Rockville Centre resident, Ellen has been a working artist and jewelry designer for more than 30 years, displaying and winning awards in many juried art and jewelry shows. Ragamuffin parade and party

Rockville Centre's 20th annual Halloween Costume Party and Parade will take place on Oct. 31. Youngsters pre-k and up are invited to join the parade that starts at the Village Green, Maple and Lee avenues at 2 p.m. and proceeds down Maple Avenue to the Rec Center. At the Rec Center, there will be games, fun and prizes for the costumed marchers. Everyone must register for the parade and/or party at the center for $7 per family. In case of rain, the parade will be cancelled, but the party will begin at 3 p.m.

Goblin calls

Fill out the Goblin Slips at the party after the Ragamuffin Parade on Oct. 31 and you may be one of the lucky ones to receive a Goblin Call and Goblin prize on Halloween evening.

Open gym program

The main gymnasium of the Rec Center will be open for free play basketball for grades 4 and up on Saturday afternoons from 2-4:30 beginning Oct. 30. The evening open gym for grades 6 and up began Oct. 8 from 7:30 p.m. - 10:15 p.m. A valid 2010-11 Recreation Card is required for entry.

33rd Annual 10K, 5K and Family Fun Run

The annual 10K, 6.2-mile road race and the newer 5K, 3.1-mile race both take place on Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. on Park Avenue between Merrick Road and Sunrise Highway opposite the Fantasy Theatre. Race day registration is at Village Hall, One College Place and Clinton Avenue and costs $28 for the 10K and $22 for the 5K.

The course is flat and fast. The race will be run rain or shine. The one-mile Family Fun Run begins at 9 a.m. on Front Street in front of the LIRR station. The entry fee is $9. For information on these races. co-sponsored by the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce, call (516) 678-9339.

Winter Programs

The Recreation Department will start taking reservations for winter programs beginning Nov. 8. Detailed fliers are available at the Rec Center, 111 North Oceanside Road. Programs offered this year include: Kinder-crafts, Happy Piano Jamboree, Cooking for Kids, Cartoon Time, Mad Science, Brush Strokes, Fencing, All-Star Sports, RVC Rec Center Gymnastic Competition Team and Dodgeball for Kids.

Nursery School Openings

There are limited openings remaining in the morning pre-pre-kindergarten classes which meet four days a week from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and in the pre pre-kindergarten classes which meet Tuesday and Thursday from 12:15 to 2:45 p.m.

Food Donations Needed

The Rec Center is accepting donations of canned and dry goods as well as frozen turkeys or coupons for distribution to the needy in our community. Bring your donations Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. before Thanksgiving. Coupons may be mailed or dropped off at the Rec Center.

Operation Christmas Child

The Recreation Department is collecting school supplies and toiletries for needy children. Donations, which must be in their original packaging, may be made Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Recreation Center.

Birthday Parties and Rentals

The Rec Center offers age-appropriate birthday parties to village residents for pre-school and elementary age children seven days a week. All parties include an organized activity followed by refreshment and celebration time in the party room. Call for available dates and fees. Rooms at the John A. Anderson Recreation Center and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center are available for rental to groups and organizations. Equipment rentals are also available. The Recreation Department's Annual Holiday Crafts Fair and Flea Market is Dec. 5 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Annual Chanukah Party co-sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women is Dec. 6 from 4 to 5:15 p.m. All faiths are invited.

The Village's Annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony on the Village Green, Maple and Lee avenues, is Dec. 9 starting at 7:30 p.m.

Breakfast with Santa’s Helpers is scheduled for Dec. 12 with seatings at 9:15, 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Pre-register by Dec. 11. Fee is $5 per person.

Halloween Party

Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. The annual costume party will feature Halloween treats, a costume parade and entertainment. $4 pp. ($8 late fee applies).

Ongoing

Sandel Senior Men’s Club

The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. for breakfast and business. At 11 a.m., when available, guest speakers discuss topics of interest to men. A variety of trips and programs are scheduled. Check with the center for a schedule.
