Home damaged by fire in Valley Stream

Posted

Two residents escaped a house fire in early Valley Stream, but the East Avenue home sustained significant damage.

The Valley Stream Fire Department was called to 75 East Ave. at about 4 a.m. on Sept. 15. According to Chief Joseph Fernandez, the fire started in a car in the driveway and spread to the adjacent home, as well as another car. "The whole side of house was burnt out," he said.

Fernandez said two residents who rented the second floor escaped uninjured. They were alerted to the fire by an unknown passerby who saw the flames and banged on the door. A downstairs apartment was unoccupied at the time.

About 75 firefighters from Valley Stream responded and the fire took about an hour-and-a-half to bring under control. The Elmont Fire Department assisted at the scene with Malverne and Hewlett providing stand-by coverage.

No firefighters were injured.
