John Street Complex building completed

East Rockaway Recreation plans new programs, activities

The long awaited construction on the interior and exterior of the East Rockaway Recreation Building, located at the John Street Complex, is completed, according to Mayor Francis T. Lenahan.

Lenahan and the village board were committed to finishing the project to provide the youth of the community with a place to conduct indoor programs and socialize. The board is also looking to expand the rec programs and this new facility will help to serve this goal.

“We are extremely proud and excited at the opening of this new facility,” said the new Recreation Director Richard Kappel. “We look forward to holding our new fitness and youth programs there.”

The new John Street recreation building is located at 17 John Street, Programs such as Zumba for adults, Fitness for Life, Fame and video nights, movie nights, will be some of the first to be held at the new facility. The youth of the village should take advantage of this beautiful building, said Lenahan, encouraging the residents to register for these programs and stay informed on any upcoming programs.

“I would like to thank each and every person who contributed in any way with the successful completion of this project,” said Lenahan. The list is long and includes village staff, led by engineer Juan Garcia, P.E. along with the help and effort of State Sen. Dean Skelos who provide the village with $200,000 in original funding to start the project.

The village has contracted with H.U.M.A.N. (Helping unite man and nutrition) for the installation of vending machines for the John Street building, where healthy snacks and drinks will be available inside the facility.
