Long Beach digs out from over a foot of snow

Plows continue to roll in the city during second major snowstorm of 2014

The second winter storm of the year covered the barrier island with a foot of snow on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Long Beach Public Schools will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 22. All classes, transportation and after-school and evening activities are canceled.

As of 10 p.m. Tuesday night, The National Weather Service reported 10.5 inches of snow in Lido Beach, and the Weather Channel is reported a total of 13 inches of snow for Long Beach.

Temperatures dropped to 10 degrees in Long Beach on Wednesday, with a wind chill value of -9 degrees.

The city’s public works crews were plowing all night in the snow and fierce winds, which continued to pose a challenge on Wednesday in the form of drifting snow.”

“Every single road in the city's 52-miles of road has seen a plow and a sander at least twice,” the city said on its website.

Though the city said that roads are passable, it advised motorists to be aware of slippery conditions during the freezing temperatures.

“Please continue to stay off roads if possible. If you must drive, leave extra time take it very slow. When shoveling, please take care not to shovel into the streets if possible to avoid plowing in your neighbors. Also, we encourage Long Beach residents to check on their neighbors, especially seniors, to be sure that everyone is OK and has what they need.”

Recycling has been suspended Wednesday so the city was able to send out additional vehicles to sand and plow the streets.

All city activities were canceled Tuesday evening, and Wednesday morning senior and daycare programs were cancelled too. Additionally, the City Council meeting was rescheduled for Jan. 22 at 7pm., and
 the Long Beach Public Library closed at 3 p.m. The West End Arts Board meeting has been rescheduled to Jan. 28, and the Acting Workshop with Hillary Nussdorf is canceled.
