Man of the year

Charles Drucker of Rockville Centre, a member of Central Synagogue of Nassau County since 1996, was recognized by the temple’s Brotherhood as its 2010 Man of the Year. This award has been given annually since 1965 to a member of the Brotherhood who has demonstrated devoted service to Judaism, the Brotherhood, Central Synagogue and the community.

Well known to his friends and family as Charlie, Drucker has been a member of Central’s Board of Trustees, and as an active member of Brotherhood, he was involved in the formation of the softball team which competes in a league of Brotherhoods, in addition to a number of other activities. Drucker also served as master of Central’s web page for five years and chaired the Internet Technology Committee. In the latter two roles he pioneered bringing services and other events through the use of streaming video to congregants and others who, due to illness or other reasons, are unable to attend in person.

Speakers at the Dec. 10 dinner and award ceremony, attended by nearly 100 people, included Rabbi Marc Gruber and long time friend Mark Reiss. Reiss spoke in praise of Drucker and delighted the crowd with some good-natured jokes during a roast of him as well.

When he received the award, Drucker thanked his wife, Lori, and their two sons, Todd and Jason, for their support of his volunteer activities. He also spoke about the important role his entire family has played in his life, and acknowledged the vital role his congregational family at Central Synagogue has had in adding meaning, friendship and purpose to his life. Drucker was honored again the same evening by being recognized at the Shabbat service that immediately followed the award dinner and ceremony.
