As of Sept. 11, all traffic on Bay Boulevard will be shifted onto a temporary roadway between Rockaway Turnpike and Rason Road by the Nassau Expressway (Route 878), New York State Department of Transportation officials said. The number of travel lanes on Bay Boulevard will not be reduced and dedicated left turning lanes in each direction to Route 878 will also remain.
Message signs have been placed in the area to guide and alert motorists. This pattern configuration is expected to be in place for roughly two months. As with most road projects, work may be cancelled, postponed or prolonged because of bad weather.
The changes are part of the Department of Transportation's $130 million construction project of the new northbound roadway of Route 878 continues as part of the $130 million that aims to improve the safety and operation of the Nassau Expressway between Rockaway Turnpike and Burnside Avenue, as well as upgrade the resiliency of the roadway that serves an emergency coastal storm evacuation route.
