Oceanside fades after big start

In a come-from-behind 60-58 win over Syosset, Kaplan scored a career-high 18 points. He followed up that effort with 11 points and nine rebounds in the win over Massapequa. Sophomore point guard Casey Kelly, the leading scorer on the junior varsity as a freshman, has held his own in a conference loaded with solid guard play.

Oceanside’s playoff chances are slim. The Sailors need to win at least two of their last three games, and will need some help as well.

Keegan likes the effort his team has given. “I remind the kids all the time that most of the county’s top teams are in this conference,” Keegan said. “There are no easy games. We’re a little young so we knew there would be some tough nights. We’ve got knocked around a couple of times, but we’ve come out and played hard every game.”

Oceanside closes the regular season when it hosts Syosset on Monday at 7 p.m.
