There will be enhanced patrols to identify and arrest motorists driving under the influence during the Labor Day weekend, according to Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder.

The initiative was encouraged by a DWI Enforcement grant from the New York State STOP DWI Program, which reflects the county’s dedication to keeping streets safe on one of the busiest travel holidays of the year, officials said. DWI stands for driving while impaired.

The county’s Marine Bureau will also step up patrols.

Nassau officials, including County Executive Bruce Blakeman urge drivers and boat operators to use proper judgment to keep the roads and waterways safe, and to be sure to refrain from drinking when handling a vehicle or boat.
