Display Cases

Barbershop Behind the Glass

The Display Cases at the Rockville Centre Public Library will feature a special exhibit throughout the month of August focusing attention on the Barbershop Harmony Society which currently boasts some 30,000 members. The visuals trace “barbershop” four-part a capella singing from the society’s first meeting 73 years ago on a Tulsa rooftop to its status today. The non-profit Nassau Mid-Island Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society is the biggest chorus of its kind on Long Island and welcomes new members at its weekly meetings throughout the year. “Many people are still unaware how far ‘barbershopping’ has come,” said Nassau Mid-Island Chapter President Hal Verity. ”It’s far from four guys singing Sweet Adeline on a street corner. It’s an art form reflected in notables that have and continue to enjoy it; found in TV commercials, sitcoms, children’s programs, in ball parks, and so much more. Awareness is what our traveling exhibit is all about.”
