From props to jets: Aviation's journey to the jet age Author Michael Machat, a native of Rockville Centre, will be on hand to present a lecture and sign books at The Cradle of Aviation Museum on Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. An accomplished aviation journalist and photographer, Machat will discuss the rise and dominance of commercial airliners that began after World War II and captured the imagination of the public. Using archival photography and vintage airline memorabilia to capture the “feel” of that time period, Machat will take a look at pioneering aircraft like the Douglas DC-7, Lockheed Constellation and Boeing Stratocruiser, as well as turbojets like the Boeing 707, Douglas DC-8 and the Convair 880. Born and raised in Rockville Centre, Machat spent much of his time fascinated by the growth of commercial aviation at New York’s Idlewild Airport (JFK International). An accomplished artist, Machat has two paintings at the Smithsonian. He is an aviation journalist and editor of WINGS and AIRPOWER magazine. Rockville Centre actress Gina Baez, a South Side High School graduate, will star as Anna in the upcoming production of Rogers and Hammerstein’s classic, “The King and I” at St. Gregory’s Theater, 244-44 87th Ave. in Bellerose. The show will be presented on Aug. 6,7,11,12, 13 and 14 at 8 p.m. and on Aug. 8 and 15 at 2 p.m. To reserve tickets which are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and $7 for children under 12, call (718) 989-2451 or visit Tickets@SGTG.org. Rockville Centre Historical Society

The Museum of the Village of Rockville Centre invites one and all to visit and enjoy the historic restoration at 28 Hempstead Ave. Summer hours are Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and also by appointment for groups. On display are kitchen tools, carpentry tools, period furniture, pharmaceutical collectibles and much more. The Victorian Garden is in full bloom for all to enjoy. There is no fee. Blood Drive at MMC

Village Summer Concert

On Aug. 12 at 7:30 p.m., Plaza Theatrical Productions will present “Go’in Hollywood” on the Village Green at Maple and Lee avenues. Bring a law chair or a blanket to sit on. In case of rain, the concert wil be held indoors at the Recreation Center, 111 N. Oceanside Road.

3-on-3 Basketball Tournament

On Aug. 14 the tournament will feature a sports raffle and lively competition. Doors open at noon; tip-off is at 1 p.m. at the Recreation Center, 111 N.Oceanside Road. The event benefits Hoops 4 Hope Charity and will show which team has what it takes to win.
