Newcomers Club

The club will hold a couples event, Bowling, on Feb. 11 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at RVC Lanes, 100 Maple Ave. RSVP to rvcnewcomersclub@gmail.com (subject line "Bowling"). All profits will be donated to Kathy Burns, a local resident who is recovering from a multivisceral organ transplant.

Lunch and chocolate tasting event

On Feb 12, from 1 - 4 p.m., the LI/NYC Metro Area Young Widow/ers is holding Lunch and Chocolate Tasting Event. The cost is $10 cash + min. $10 food/beverage order. Chase away the pre-Valentine's blues by sampling special, delicious chocolates that are good for you, while mingling with other young widows and widowers. The event takes place in the Empress Diner, 2490 Hempstead Turnpike, East Meadow. To RSVP, call (516) 536-1410 or nassauhu@gmail.com. This group is for widows and widowers who are past their initial grieving period and are mostly younger than 60. All ages are welcome.

West Point Jewish Chapel Choir

As part of its 75th Anniversary Year, Central Synagogue of Nassau County welcomes the West Point Jewish Chapel Choir. On Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m., the 26 cadets of the Jewish Chapel Choir will perform a concert in the temple's Sanctuary. All members of the community are welcome to attend, there is no charge for admission. The choir will also give a special performance on Sunday for students in Central's Religious School. Founded in 1947-1948, the choir performs at West Point community services and, by invitation, to congregations throughout the United States.

St. Agnes Cathedral School Gala

St Agnes Cathedral School cordially invites the public to its 2011 Gala Ball at the Garden City Hotel on Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. This Year’s honorees will be Chris and Eileen White Jahn and Mary Beth Croutier, for their support of and commitment to Catholic Education. Clare Silecchia is also being recognized for her dedicated service. It promises to be a lovely evening with dinner and dancing. Black tie optional. Fortnightly Club

On Feb. 15, the club's Exhibits Chairwoman Dorothy Hughes will present Dr. Ray Ann Havasy from the Tanglewood Preserve and Center for Science Teaching and Learning. Dr. Havasy will describe the preserve and the CSTL museum. The meeting begins at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mark's United Methodist Church on Hempstead Avenue. Visitors are welcome.

The Lost Jews of China

The public is invited to a 92nd Street Y Live program at Temple B'nai Sholom on Feb. 15 at 8:15 p.m. to hear a live simulcast, with Shi Lei, from the Y. The topic is the history of Jewish life in Kaifeng, China. Beginning during the Northern Sung Dynasty when the Jews of Persia and India traveled the Silk Road, the community thrived for many years before dying out in 1860. Shi Lei works as a national tour guide of Jewish sites in China. Tickets for this event only are $15, but admission is lower if you purchase tickets for multiple programs in the spring 2011 season. Irish Classes

Molloy College will offer Irish Level 2 classes (for beginners) and Irish Level 3, Part II on multiple Saturdays from 9:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. A fee of $160 for eight classes applies. The classes will run simultaneously. Students will receive reinforcement of skills learned in previous classes as well as instruction designed to increase ability to use and converse. Village Art Club

The Village Art Club is proud to welcome Carolyn Clarke, noted teacher and prize winner of Sumi-e. She will be demonstrating Chinese brush painting on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. in the downstairs meeting room of the Rockville Centre Library, 221 N. Village Ave. The meeting is free. Stroll the Boardwalk

The St. Agnes Mothers’ Club Luncheon and Fashion Show will be held on March 3 at the Garden City Hotel.

Molloy College Film Festival

On March 3 at 5 p.m., the Molloy College Film Festival presents "Exit Through the Gift Shop." Described as a documentary comedy, the film is the work of the brilliant British graffiti artist, Banksy. The screening an d discussion are free and open to the public.

Newcomers Club

On March 3 from 6 -9 p.m. the ladies will meet at the Peter Frank Salon, 197 N. Long Beach Rd.

Need homework help? Homework Helpers, a partnership program between the Sandel Senior Center Service Corps and the Rockville Centre Public Library offers help with homework to students in grades 1-6 every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between the hours of 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. in the. Children’s Room of the Library. For further details, contact librarians in the Children’s Room at (516) 766-6257.

The Library’s Career Center is open Saturdays. Five computers available for job search needs. All computers are equipped with Win-Way Resume Preparation software, MS Word and Office programs. Portraits by Ralph Keefe

Keefe, a native of New Hampshire, settled in Oceanside following his service in the Air Force during World War II. Following his military service, Keefe studied art under the GI Bill at the New York Phoenix School of Design which later became part of Pratt Institute. Upon graduation he was employed at a commercial art studio in Manhattan, and eventually opened his own studio on East 55th Street which he operated for 30 years. Throughout his working years, Keefe’s creative energies were primarily directed toward his business endeavors, but he enjoyed photography and jewelry design as hobbies. Now retired, he devotes all his time to painting. His usual medium are oils. He loves painting people, striving to capture the inner person in addition to the physical characteristics unique to each individual.

Helen Krauss Community Room Gallery and Small Community Room Gallery: Suburban Art League Annual Exhibit. The Suburban Art League is a non-profit corporation that was founded to increase cooperation among artists, art students, and all those engaged in pursuit of the arts. The League provides a registry service for artists, promotes study and involvement in art, and holds competitions and exhibits.. Annual membership dues are $25 for an individual and $30 for a family. Interested parties can visit www.suburbanart.org.

New Programs

Some of the newest additions to the Rec Center's exciting line-up of programs include Happy Piano Baby Bounce for infants/toddlers, Mad Science for Pre-K, a Dodgeball league for Middle Schoolers, and Fencing Instruction and BrushStrokes art class for elementary students.

LIT Applications available

Leader in Training Applications are available. This program is for children entering 9th and up in September 2011 who would like to volunteer for the Summer Playground Program from June 28th to August 8th. Program fills up very quickly.

Men's Spring Softball

Completed roster with all fees are due by Feb. 16. Competition is scheduled to commence the week of April 4.

Gymnastics Meets

The center's two competitive Gymnastics Teams, RVC United and RVC Ultimate, will compete in a series of meets against each other and vs. Flips Gymnastics and Great Neck Gymnastics Teams on: Mar. 5, Mar. 12, Mar. 26, April 9, April 30 and May 7, all at 2 p.m. The individual and team championship competitions are set for May 21 and June 12. Spectators are encouraged to come out and support RVC's gymnasts! Admission is free.

Summer Nursery School and Playground

Registration for Summer Nursery School will begin on March 7 for children who will be entering Kindergarten in 2011 or 2012.

Registration for Summer Playground and Summer Rec. Programs will begin on March 28 for children entering grades 1-8 in September 2011. Detailed flyers will be available in February.

Spring Craft Fair and Flea Market

The Rec Center's annual Spring Crafts Fair and Flea Market will be held on March 27 from 9:30 a.m. –4 p.m. Vendors will be selling an assortment of items from jewelry to woodcrafts, toys and clothing. Free parking and admission is free.

Long Island African Violet Show

The Long Island African Violet Society hosts its annual flower show the weekend of April 1. Call the Rec. Center office for details.

Game 7 Tee Ball Program

The Game 7 Tee Ball Program is open to children age 5 and 6 and reside in the Incorporated Village of Rockville Centre or within the Rockville Centre school district. League age is determined by the participant's age as of April 30, 2011.

T-Ball is played on the field directly behind the Rec Center. Practices and games will be held on Tuesday and Thursday nights beginning in May. Registration will be in-person only and will take place at the Rec Center on Feb. 8 and Feb. 10 from 7-9 p.m.. To register: Fill out the registration form and attach a copy of your child’s birth certificate along with a check for $75 made payable to Game 7 Sports, Inc.

Special Needs Program

Connor and Friends will take place on Feb. 13 and 27 from 2:30-4 p.m. This program is staffed by trained recreation center personnel to provide a fun and safe activity environment for children with special needs, including autism and Down Syndrome. The next dates are March 13 and March 27 Interested families may contact Paul Lawless at mplawless@ verizon.net.

AARP Tax Assistance Program:

Representatives from the AARP Tax Assistance Program will be at the Sandel Senior Center every Friday morning from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. You must make an appointment by calling the Sandel Senior Center at (516) 678-9350. This service is available to RVC Seniors who are 60 years of age and older.

Valentine’s Party

Feb. 11 at 1 p.m. Celebrate Valentine’s Day with great music, dancing and a delicious dessert. Entertainer Al Zimmerman will teach the “Cupid Shuffle."

Artist Reception

Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. Reception for Artist of the Month Al Forgacz. Non-members are welcome.

Black History Luncheon

Feb. 16 at noon. Meet special guest Patrick Morris, director of the MLK Community Center and enjoy a tribute to black musicians presented by Arnie Gruber. $5pp ($6 at the door).

NEW PROGRAM

Mah Jongg lessons

Wednesdays at 2 p.m. An eight-session class is designed for those who are new to the game and those who need a refresher course. Members only.

Sandel Senior Men’s Club

The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. for breakfast and business. At 11 a.m., when available, guest speakers discuss topics of interest to men. A variety of trips and programs are scheduled. Check with the center for a schedule.
