It's party time!

Sandel Center to throw bash for residents 90 years and older

With an invitation that reads, "Celebrate 90 years of living, years of sharing, loving, giving. Your grace and style still make us smile as you continue to be an inspiration to everyone who knows you," the staff of the Sandel Center at 50 S. Park Avenue is throwing a garden party to celebrate residents who are "90-plus years young." The festivities, on July 30 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. will include live music and an old-fashioned ice cream bar for a donation of $4. Please RSVP to Laura or Mary at (516) 678-9350.

Community Events

Rockville Centre Historical Society

The Museum of the Village of Rockville Centre invites one and all to visit and enjoy the historic restoration at 28 Hempstead Ave. Summer hours are Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and also by appointment for groups. On display are kitchen tools, carpentry tools, period furniture, pharmaceutical collectibles and much more. The Victorian Garden is in full bloom for all to enjoy. There is no fee. Tree of Life Yoga

Central Synagogue of Nassau County, 430 DeMott Ave., is sponsoring a summer "mini" session, with evening classes of yoga. The classes are open to yoga students of all levels. The series of five classes began on June 29 at 7:30 p.m. The series is available for $60 or you may pay as you go for $15 a class. Members of the community are invited to participate. Village Summer Concert

On July 22 at 7:30 p.m. the village will present the first of two summer concerts on the Village Green at Maple and Lee avenues. The Black Velvet band will play Irish music. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket to sit on. In case of rain, the concert will be held at the Recreation Center, 111 N. Oceanside Road.

Friday Flea Market

On July 23 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., the Sandel Senior Center, 50 S. Park Ave., will hold an Indoor Flea Market and Giant Book Sale, an important fundraiser for the center. Admission is free. Items for sale will include a wide variety of women’s, men’s and children’s clothing, household items, new and vintage jewelry, bric a brac, toys and books. Defensive Driving Course at Mercy Mercy Medical Center will offer the community the Empire Safety Council’s Defensive Driving Course on July 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Mercy League Lounge located across from the entrance to the hospital’s Emergency Department. Local World Cup

The Rockville Centre Soccer League will host its free summer soccer program from July 26 to July 29 on the north field of the Dean Skelos Athletic Complex on Peninsula Boulevard, from 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. "Kids Teaching Kids" is a two-week program that gives new and younger players an opportunity to learn the game from its older players. Community members are invited to bring their children and let them experience how much fun soccer can be at one of the most popular and exciting events of the summer in Rockville Centre. Dance auditions

On July 27, Leggz Ltd. Dance, 222 Sunrise Highway, will hold auditions for classically trained men and women for the annual full-length production of the “Nutcracker Suite” ballet with the South Shore Symphony Orchestra. Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar

Blood Drive at MMC

Mercy Medical Center invites and encourages members of the community to participate in a Blood Drive to support Long Island Blood Services on July 29 from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. on the first floor of the St. Anne’s building on the hospital campus.To register call Jeannie Jaeger at (516) 705-2589.

Village Summer Concert

On Aug. 12 at 7:30 p.m., Plaza Theatrical Productions will present “Go’in Hollywood” on the Village Green at Maple and Lee avenues. Bring a law chair or a blanket to sit on. In case of rain, the concert wil be held indoors at the Recreation Center, 111 N. Oceanside Road.

3-on-3 Basketball Tournament

On Aug. 14 the tournament will feature a sports raffle and lively competition. Doors open at noon; tip-off is at 1 p.m. at the Recreation Center, 111 N.Oceanside Road. The event benefits Hoops 4 Hope Charity and will show which team has what it takes to win. Summer Programs

Summer programs: Baseball School, Girls Basketball Clinic, Boys and Girls Lacrosse Camps, RVC Rec “Ultimate Gymnastic School,” Mad Science Camps, Cartoon-Time, Computer Explorer, Tennis Lessons, Happy Piano Adventure and assorted Gymnastics clinics have started. The Summer Playground Program, in its 56th consecutive year, is also under way and will run through Aug. 12. The center also offers tennis on its courts that are open seven days a week from 8 a.m. through dusk, aerobic exercise classes and summer birthday parties for village residents from ages 2-12. Call the Rec Center for schedules and fees.

Fall program registration begins

All village residents should have received their 2010-11 annual Recreation Department brochure. It lists all the programs offered by the Recreation Department for pre-schoolers through senior citizens. Everyone is encouraged to register early, as most programs have enrollment limits. AARP Defensive Driving:

Aug. 12 and Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. You must attend both evenings. This course is open to Sandel members and residents of Rockville Centre. $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-AARP members. Call the center for availability.

SPECIAL EVENTS:

Thursday Evenings are Back with TaiChi from 4:15-5:15 and Yoga from 5:30-6:30. Both classes are taught by a certified instructor. $5 per session for non-members. A “Lite Bite” dinner is available for purchase.

Mondays at 2 p.m. A lively discussion on topics pulled from today’s headlines. $5 per session for non-members.

Flea Market

Young at Heart

Celebrating all 90 -year olds: July 30 at 1 p.m.. A Garden Park celebration for all those who have reached the age of 90+. This party is open to the community and costs $4 per person.

Sandel Senior Men’s Club:

The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. for breakfast and business. At 11 a.m., when available, guest speakers discuss topics of interest to men. A variety of trips & programs are scheduled for July and August.
