Rockville Centre police reported that extra enforcement on Wednesday evening — one of the busiest nights of the year for local establishments — kept incidents in the village to a minimum. The department had extra officers and extra patrols in the central business district, near the licensed bars and restaurants.

Despite the stepped up police presence, a department spokesman said that there were about a dozen disturbances in the village during that period of time. There were no arrests in one reported assault on Front Street near the taxi stand. Police said that the people involved reportedly fled before officers arrived. The spokesman also said that there were no DWI arrests on village roads Wednesday night. “The message is getting out,” he said. “Don’t drink and drive.”
