Seaford elementary students celebrate fall and fitness

The Seaford community came together to celebrate fall and fitness on Oct. 20 at the Autumn Classic.

Coordinated by physical education teachers, the Autumn Classic promotes the importance of making healthy choices and good character. Both Manor and Harbor elementary school students and their parents participated in the event, held on the Seaford High School track.

“We hold this family fitness day to make the kids aware that exercise can be fun, if you do it with other people,” said Dianne Dunn, a physical education teacher at Manor. “We invite the families to join us, so the parents can get more involved and the children get to see there parents during the day.”

In addition to walking and running the track for 45 minutes, the students also visit fitness stations inside the gymnasium to learn about nutrition. The children tracked their exercise and food intake to see if they were eating correctly and making positive meal choices.

Students in each class sported a different color T-shirt (all provided by the PTA) with the message “character counts” scrawled across the front. School officials explained that the six different colors represent the elements of good character that the students learned about in their classrooms.

“My favorite part is just watching the kids have fun while they exercise,” Dunn added. “It makes it super enjoyable.”
