Security increased after Homecoming violence in Baldwin

Investigation continues as school tries to move on

Gunshots rang out and a 20-year-old Freeport resident was punched and stabbed at Baldwin Senior High School’s Homecoming game last Friday, prompting the school to implement stepped-up security measures early this week.

The game, in which the Bruins took on Hicksville High School’s Comets, started favorably for Baldwin. The Bruins had built a 33-0 lead when shots were heard coming from a parking lot bordering the field, and the action was suspended. Officials would eventually declare Baldwin the game’s winner, but the result was rendered an afterthought by off-the-field events.

According to detectives from the Nassau County Police Department’s 1st Squad, “a 20-year-old and three 16-year-old males from Freeport” were leaving the game when two men approached them in the parking lot. One of the two men pointed a black handgun at the four Freeporters and fired two shots, police reported, one of which shattered the window of a 1999 Ford Explorer. A 44-year-old man and his 8-year-old daughter were in the car at the time of the shooting, but neither was injured.

“The four male victims ran towards the school and became separated,” police said last Saturday. “The 20-year-old victim was punched and stabbed two times in the parking lot by an unknown subject.”

The stabbing victim was injured in the back and buttocks, police said. He was taken to a hospital for treatment, but his injuries were not life-threatening.

Police described the first suspect in the attack as between 5 feet 3 and 5 feet 6, with a thin build and a dark complexion, and said he was wearing a red Adidas sweatsuit jacket and a red baseball cap, and was armed with a black handgun. The second suspect was described as 5 feet 9 to 6 feet 1, also thin and with a dark complexion, and wearing a striped shirt. Detectives requested that anyone with information about the incident call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at (800) 244-TIPS. No further information on the investigation was available as the Herald went to press on Monday.
