Storm forces cancellations and delays in Long Beach

As a nor’easter pummeled the barrier island on Thursday, the storm forced the closure of Long Beach schools and a number of city activities.

Schools were initially on a two-hour delay early Thursday morning, but the district decided to close as the storm intensified and created treacherous driving conditions.

“Good decision,” Sarah Bartlet Lantz told the Herald on Facebook. “No job is worth wrecking cars for or getting hurt.”

Additionally, the Long Island Rail Road announced scattered 15- to 20-minute delays system-wide, including the Long Beach branch, with the exception of the Port Jefferson branch, where service was temporarily suspended in both directions between Hicksville and Port Jefferson because of the weather.

The Long Beach Public Library announced on its website that it was set to open at 11 a.m. Meanwhile, the Magnolia Senior Center canceled all activities on Thursday, though the Magnolia Child Care Center was open. Officials said that parents would be notified of any changes.

Although the Recreation Center is open, city officials said that all of Thursday's programs had been canceled, with the exception of red and senior swim team. Cancellations included blue and white swim team, swim lessons, swim club, basketball, CrossFit and Earth Arts. Schedule updates can be found on the city's website.
