Village is still considering a pool

Rockville Centre is still weighing the possibility of having a village pool.

Last year, the pool committee, led by Chairman Jack Matthews, determined that the two best sites for a village pool are the Recreation Center, and south of the RVC Athletic Complex on Peninsula Boulevard.

The committee then asked the village to look into any legal issues or restrictions that might impact the construction of a pool at those sites.

Village Attorney Tom Levin found an agreement between the village and New York State that all programs at the Rec Center must be open to the general public, but it was unsigned. Levin determined that it was not valid and did not apply to a pool. He then suggested that the village do more research in case there are other records that would impede having a pool.

In March, the village asked both Nassau County and New York State if either body has objections, concerns or restrictions to either site. According to Matthews, both entities are still evaluating the proposed sites.

The village would not comment about this and redirected the Herald to Matthews.

The push for a pool began in 2014, when resident Mary Beth Kearns presented a petition to the village board supporting the construction of a public pool.

In the meantime, Mayor Francis X. Murray and the board reached an agreement with Lynbrook in which Rockville Centre families can purchase memberships at the Lynbrook village pool for $780, individual adults for $520, individual seniors for $465, couples for $725, senior couples for $675, and children between the ages of 3 and 12 for $245.
