Village news you can use

Posted

The following information was announced during Malverne’s board meeting on September 7:

Update on the Tri-Color building
The village announced last week that the owner of the Tri-Color building and representatives of the Fitness 19 are still negotiating the terms of the lease, and there is no new news to report on its progress. The Herald reported in July that the two parties had been in negotiations since September 2015.

Village Juice Bar
Lou Santora, supervisor of the village’s buildings department, said during last week’s meeting that a new juice bar — which has been under construction for months and is located on Hempstead Avenue near the Bank of America — has open permits to continue construction, but has not proceeded for reasons unknown to the village.

Free firewood
The village announced last week that free firewood will be available at the village’s Department of Public Works every weekday from 9 a.m. through 1 p.m. The Department of Public Works is located at 9 Hempstead Avenue next to the Malverne Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

New fire/carbon monoxide detectors
The Malverne Fire Department reminds residents to evacuate their home if a carbon monoxide alarm goes off and call the fire department immediately. Do not open windows and doors, as it makes it harder for the fire department to local the source of the problem.

Malverne Fire Chief James Lang also mentioned that there are new, worry-free detectors that have a 10-year shelf life — so no need to change the battery every six months. They cost approximately anywhere from $25-$40 and are available at Home Depot, Lowes and similar stores.

Fall tree plantings
The village is once again preparing for a fall planting of curbline trees. Call village hall at 516-599-1200 to get your name added to list. Trees will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Cost is $150 for residents and $75 for seniors age 65 and over. The price includes the cost of planting the tree on your curb.
If you are interested in planting a tree on your private property, the village reimburses $200 for specific large trees that you plant. Call village hall for details prior to making any purchases, as there are strict guidelines to follow for this program.
Anyone who takes down a tree must complete a tree removal form to receive a permit, and must also use a contractor licensed by the village. Permits can only be granted for valid reasons: like diseased or dangerous trees.

Malverne Public Library
The library now has fall hours, meaning it will now be open on Saturdays. Residents can now visit the library from 9:30 – 5:00 p.m. each. The library also has two new librarians.
