Last month, more than 150 students from around Long Island attended Adelphi University’s annual Poetry Festival, which included workshops, a student poetry reading and a keynote address by the award-winning poet Terrance Hayes, a professor of English at Carnegie Mellon University. One of eight high school juniors to receive an Excellence in Poetry award was 11th-grader Sarah Burroughs, of West Hempstead. She won her second award from the festival for her poem “Later.”
