Heatherwood representatives joined West Hempstead residents at the West Hempstead Community Support Association meeting on Oct. 16 to provide an update on the new two-building luxury apartment complex being constructed in the community.
“I hope that you’re happy with the progress you’re seeing at this site,” Christine Linsalato, Heatherwood’s vice president of development, said. “We wanted to deliver a new gateway for West Hempstead and I think that we were successful.”
The family-owned real estate business with properties across Long Island, is developing a $260 million, 428-unit, nine-acre complex at 111 Hempstead Turnpike to replace a dilapidated shopping center, across from the Long Island Rail Road station, with the infusion of new residents expected to boost the local economy.
Heritage Westminster includes two buildings with access to various amenities. The representatives expect tenants to begin moving in the spring, around April 2026. There will be an array of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom flats and townhomes available, with prices ranging from $2,800 to $6,700.
Heatherwood offers 12 to 24 month leases and prices may increase in the future. Residents in the townhomes will have direct access to sidewalks on Westminster Road and Broad Street.
Heritage Westminster was not required to include affordable housing units in the building. The units available are priced under or comparably to market rate in the area, excluding West 130 across the street.
Representatives said the construction fence currently blocking nearby sidewalks would be dismantled by the end of January. As once siding is completed and the two-acre outdoor courtyard is set up, construction will largely occur inside the buildings throughout the winter season.
Broad Street, which has been closed to traffic, will also re-open once construction is completed.
Community members at the meeting shared concerns about parking in the neighborhood. Heatherwood confirmed that parking will be available for residents under the building for a fee and residents will be required to park on the property.
Concerns were also voiced about fire safety and firetruck access, to which representatives’ assured the building meets all code and fire safety requirements. Heatherwood continuously works with the Town of Hempstead fire marshalls and will collaborate with the West Hemsptead Fire Department.
The building will also have onsite leasing, management, and maintenance personnel. “We don’t third party manage,” Linsalato said. “We do everything in house for maintenance, property management, leasing, construction to development.”
Heritage Westminster will include retail opportunities, though there are no leases currently signed for those spaces. “We’re trying to hold out for a great fit for the community,” Linsalato said. There will be parking available for retail costumers in the parking garage, which is where retail and personal deliveries will be dropped off as well.
Representatives with Heritage Westminster shared they will have another update for West Hempstead community members in the spring. To contact Heatherwood with questions or concerns, call (516) 929-3401.
