West Hempstead students returned to classrooms Sept. 2, marking the start of the 2026-27 school year across the district as new and returning students settled back into their school-day routines.

Students arrived ready to reconnect with friends, meet their new teachers and become familiar with their classes and schedules for the year ahead. Across the district, teachers and staff greeted students in hallways and classrooms as they began their first activities and adjusted to being back in school after summer break.

Superintendent Dan Rehman, joined by members of the district administration, visited schools throughout West Hempstead on opening day. Rehman and administrators greeted students and teachers and observed classrooms as the district began the new academic year.

At Chestnut Street School, the first day marked a milestone for some of the youngest members of the West Hempstead school community. Prekindergarten and kindergarten students arrived to begin the school year, with administrators, teachers and staff on hand to welcome them and help make the transition into their new surroundings.

Once inside their classrooms, students participated in activities designed to help them become comfortable with their new routines, get to know their teachers and meet classmates. For students entering school for the first time, the day offered an introduction to their classrooms and the people they will spend the school year learning alongside.

Returning students, meanwhile, had an opportunity to reconnect with familiar classmates and teachers while beginning new classes and adjusting to their schedules.

The Sept. 2 opening brought students across West Hempstead back together following summer break and began another year of classroom instruction, activities and school events. For prekindergarten and kindergarten students, it marked the beginning of their first school experience, while older students returned for another year of learning alongside friends, classmates and teachers.
