The Nassau County record in the boys’ 50-yard freestyle had stood since 1982, long before any current high school student was even born. Austin Kowalsky, a senior at Mepham in North Bellmore, set out to change that this year, and handily did so with a time of 21.1 seconds, one-tenth of a second faster than the 30-year-old record.

When Mepham High School sophomore Sabrina Mastrangelo, of Bellmore, captured the title of Miss Long Island Teen last August, it was only her second pageant. So she was more than a bit surprised when, in her third competition, she was named Miss Teen New York. Sabrina spent her early years in East Rockaway and attended Rhame Avenue Elementary school until the 5th grade.

Kevin Brennan, a New York City police officer and a 2001 Mepham High School graduate, was shot in the head while chasing a suspect in a Brooklyn housing development at around 9 p.m. on Jan. 31, but survived and is now in stable condition, according to a New York City Police Department spokesperson.

If Webster’s Dictionary were to define “unsung hero,” the entry might simply read “Vincent Proto.” The 59-year-old North Bellmore native, a Little League parent volunteer and coach, shies away from the limelight. He wants no credit for all the good work he has done over the past 20 years. But make no mistake –– he deserves far more credit than we can offer in a single story.

Two Mepham High School seniors have signed national letters of intent to play sports in college. Kristen O’Brien, a three-time All-County basketball player, has signed with Adelphi University, and Claudia Law, a two-time All-County softball player, has signed with Fordham University.

On May 18, 2008, one second forever altered Jacy Good’s life when a tractor-trailer slammed head-on into her family’s station wagon, carrying the then 21-year-old and her parents, Jay and Jean. The truck swerved to avoid a mini-van, driven by an 18-year-old who, according to officials, was engrossed in a cell-phone call. The teen sped through a red light in Maidencreek, Township, Pa., apparently oblivious to the road before him.
