The Kennedy High School Student Government granted its September C.A.R.M.A. Award to Ross Shulman, a Herald student columnist. The “Cougars As Role Model Americans” Program was established by the Student Government in 2009 to showcase the efforts of members of the school community to promote volunteerism. The program has recognized Kennedy students and staff members who have helped the poor, sick, elderly and underprivileged. more

After two years, I have reached the end of my days as a Herald student columnist. I will graduate Kennedy High School on Sunday. More than anything, I hope my columns have urged the Bellmore-Merrick community to think differently about world issues. At Saw Mill Elementary School, Earth Day lasted all week. Kindergartners, first- and second-graders took part in a recycled hat parade. Letters were sent home to parents letting them know about the events, so students could create their hats at home for the parade. more

Many high school seniors, like me, are approaching their 18th birthdays. It's a significant milestone in many ways, but most important, we are granted the privilege to vote. more
