The East Meadow Senior Center celebrated the April holidays with its annual Easter and Passover party, inside its Front Street facility on April 8.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the East Meadow Senior Center on April 16 for their annual Easter party, where I was personally asked by Senior Center president Phyllis Caggiano to be the judge for their Easter bonnet decorating contest.

Carmine Cella served in the United States Air Force from 1943 to 1946, and was stationed in Saipan and the Tinian during World War II, which are part of U.S.’s Northern Mariana Islands, in the western Pacific Ocean.
Cella, now 91, said he couldn’t help but notice a huge commotion while deployed in Tinian. “I knew something was going on over there,” he said. “I didn’t know what it was.”
He later learned he was on the same island as the atomic bombs, which would soon be launched on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Mollie Spiegel turned 100 for the second time on Nov. 25, 2011. The Russian-born woman moved to America with her mother and two siblings when was she was 10 years old, but her father made his children one year younger to acquire cheaper visas, she said. This year was her 100th birthday according to American records.
