Irene Villacci, 46, an East Rockaway village trustee since 2005, resigned from the board on Monday. “My family and friends wanted me to step down after [Mayor Ed Sieban’s] death last July,” Villacci said. “They knew that Richard Meagher and I were committed to carrying out our fight for open government. The East Rockaway village board voted unanimously on Monday night to approve a new plan to rezone a portion of the industrial district into a commercial-recreation zone. The new plan focuses on the northern portion of the existing industrial zone, which includes the Berg properties, a CVS drug store and other buildings. more
East Rockaway resident Ed Corrado has announced his candidacy for trustee in the March 2011 village elections. He is seeking public office for the first time. “Reviewing all village personnel expenses will shine light on what’s really going on with our money,” said Corrado, who will represent the Pride Party. “I’m all for fiscal responsibility and good government — that’s why I join our next mayor, Fran Lenahan, in seeking to see where our hard-earned money is going.” more
Hundreds of friends and family attended the Timothy J. Motherway Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser held last Saturday at the Commuters Club on Ocean Avenue in East Rockaway. The funds raised at this second annual event will go to a graduating student at East Rockaway High School — Motherway’s alma mater. more
