On Mother’s Day, St. Raymond of Penyafort Parish honored one of their own, Elizabeth Tortorella, with a very special “Mother of the Year” award for her faith and courage in defying her doctor’s advice to terminate her pregnancy because of a life threatening illness. “It was a surprise,” said Tortorella, referring to the award. “[St. Raymond’s Parish] realized I had pain and they mentioned I was the mom who went against the doctors.” more

The Bank of America on Main Street in East Rockaway was robbed late Tuesday afternoon for the second time in three months. Police detectives investigated at the scene as a police helicopter flew overhead. Fourth precinct police described the man as being white, wearing a blue, sleeveless shirt, with a crew-cut hair style and looking "like a construction worker." They said he may have gotten into a red car. They did not reveal if a weapon was used in the robbery, or how much money was taken. more
