The East Rockaway Board of Education unanimously approved a $34.3 million proposed budget at their April 12 meeting. The plan, which calls for a 2.94 percent increase and 3.77 percent tax levy, which must still be approved by voters on May 17, includes keeping all current clubs, sports teams, the district’s enterprise program, and new programs for students with autism and disabilities, among other items. “At a certain point, it’s really up to the community what they want for their schools,” said Schools Superintendent Dr. Roseanne Melucci.

The Village of East Rockaway has released its tentative budget for 2011-12, which is 4.4 percent lower than the current spending plan, and which will reduce residents’ taxes by 3.5 percent. This tax cut would mean that the average homeowner will save approximately $94 annually.

The seventh and eighth-graders at East Rockaway’s Jr./Sr. High School held their annual Sports Night on April 14, complete with girls’ dancing, Cage volleyball, Tug-of-War, and a pie eating contest — among other events.
The evening included a Chinese Auction, with part proceeds going toward the Wounded Warrior Project.

Twenty-six-year East Rockaway resident and Army veteran Richard Gogarty, 54, has been appointed by the village board as the trustee to fill Irene Villacci’s seat. Villacci resigned from the position last week.
“Because I’ve served 20 years on active duty in the Army, I’ve had an opportunity to see cities and towns over the United States and the world,” Gogarty said. “After seeing all that, I moved to East Rockaway. This is my dream place — a small village in the middle of millions of people. … East Rockaway maintains the independent spirit and closeness found only in a small village.”

The Senior and Junior classes of East Rockaway High School will be holding a Chinese Auction on April 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the main hallway of the school. A variety of items will be auctioned off throughout the night, with partial proceeds being donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.
